Lesson Five: Little People

'Tug of War' by Slinkachu

Lesson Objectives

To learn about photography as an art form and how scale can be manipulated through photos.

To take our own photographs which manipulate size and scale.

Teachers Notes

This photograph is taken from a popular blogpost which is called 'Little People- a tiny street art project' and it would be useful to show the children some other images that the photographer has created in order to give the children a deeper understanding of the whole idea behind the project.

This image is particularly important in emphasising again to the children how an artist can create their own sense of size or scale. They should be familiar with the size of a ten pound note, but you could always have one ready to show them in order for them to understand how small the 'little people' must be in comparison.

Key Questions and Vocabulary

1.What do you see in this photograph?

2. What would you like to know about this photograph?

3. How do you think the photographer has created this?

4. Do you like this photograph? What would you be thinking if you were inside one of the 'little people'?

Photograph - Angle - Size- Comparison

The Lesson as Part of a Sequence

This is the penultimate image in the sequence, and is one of the more simple and less 'busy' images used. This should allow the children to purely focus comparison of the 'big' and 'small'.

The start of the activity will involve the children becoming familiar with the digital camera they will be using in pairs or small groups. They will be given a replica 'note' and some lego men and must work together to position the men as they want to create a photographicable scene. This should allow the children to really think and consider how their positioning plays a key role in the manipulation of size.

The next part of the activity will focus on the children using their large scale insect drawings from the first session. They will be going into the oustide environment with their drawings and be collecting natural objects such as twigs and leaves. They will use these to create their own scene with their insect drawing which will manipulate the size of the insect or the environment and produce a photograph of this. It would be nice to collect in all SD cards at the end of the lesson and share everyone's photograph.
